What Is The Purpose Of Roof Decking?

“What is decking on a roof? Why can’t I have a patio up there?”

“What is roof decking,” is a common question among new and experienced homeowners alike. One of our goals at Woodel Roof Systems is to keep you informed so you can maintain your home.

So, what is roof decking?

Sometimes called roof sheathing, it is the foundation of your roof. It’s vital for the longevity and safety of your home. It’s a layer of wood attached to the rafters or trusses of your home’s structure. All other components of your roof, like shingles and vents, are secured to this decking.

What is the purpose of the roof decking?

Roof decking protects the insulation and waterproofing underneath while supporting the shingles and everything else above. It’s generally strong enough to hold some foot traffic and a blanket of snow.

Types of roof decking

Plank decking is common among older homes.

Using 1×6 or 1×8 planks of lumber was a common practice before the invention of plywood. Some of them have survived decades of weathering. But that doesn’t mean plank deck roofs aren’t brittle and distorted. If you have plank decking, it’s recommended you replace it with:

Sheet decking, today’s standard.

It’s comprised of 4×8 sheets of plywood or OSB board. Plywood comes in a variety of thicknesses to match your structure’s needs. However, OSB board is the most commonly used material today.

When should you replace your roof decking?

Typically, decking can survive 2 or 3 roof replacements. Any more, and it’s like building a new home on a crumbling foundation.

How much does roof decking cost?

Short answer: around $85 per sheet or $3.25 per linear foot of plank (at the time of writing). Plank decking is more expensive due to increased labor costs.

Long answer: Lumber prices change weekly and can become even more volatile with supply chain issues.

For an accurate estimate on a roof deck installation, you’ll need the most trusted roofing contractor Chesterfield, VA knows. But don’t take our word for it; listen to our clients!
